Proton-M Rocket Set for Electro-L Satellite Mission
8 Feb
Summary
- Electro-L satellite launch set for February 12 from Baikonur.
- Previous launch on December 15, 2025, was postponed for repairs.
- Satellites provide vital hydrometeorological data and imagery.

The Electro-L No. 5 satellite is slated for launch aboard a Proton-M rocket from the Baikonur spaceport on February 12. This launch follows an earlier postponement from December 15, 2025, when a discrepancy was found in the rocket's upper stage during pre-launch checks. Roscosmos confirmed that the necessary repairs have been completed and the launch commission has approved the rocket's installation on the launch pad.
The Electro-L series satellites are designed for geostationary orbit, enabling them to capture comprehensive multispectral images of Earth's surface and cloud cover. They also play a critical role in collecting and disseminating hydrometeorological and heliogeophysical data. Furthermore, these satellites relay signals from emergency beacons as part of the COSPAS-SARSAT system.
This mission continues the legacy of the Electro-L program, which began with the launch of the first satellite in 2011. While communication with the first satellite was lost in 2016, subsequent satellites, Electro-L No. 2 (launched 2015) and No. 3 (launched 2019), remain operational.
