Earth's Watery Surprise: Social Media Stunned
9 Apr
Summary
- New images from space reveal Earth's surface is mostly water.
- Many social media users were surprised by the vast ocean coverage.
- Only about one percent of Earth's water is readily usable by humans.

Astonishing views of Earth from space, shared during NASA's Artemis II mission, have prompted widespread surprise on social media. Many users expressed disbelief at the sheer amount of Earth's surface covered by water, noting it differed from their understanding shaped by flat maps and globes. Some users stated they had long believed continents wrapped around the entire planet.
These revelations align with scientific understanding, as NASA confirms water covers about 75 percent of Earth's surface. This abundance has been a feature of the planet for approximately 3.8 billion years. Despite its prevalence, a significant challenge remains: only about one percent of this water is readily accessible for human needs like drinking and agriculture.
Most of Earth's water is not directly usable. It is contained within oceans, ice caps, glaciers, and deep underground reserves. NASA estimates the total water content at approximately 1.39 billion cubic kilometers, with oceans holding about 96.5 percent. Freshwater, crucial for survival, is also distributed unevenly, with much of it found in groundwater or locked in ice.
Scientists continue to explore the origins of Earth's vast water reserves. NASA suggests that water molecules are abundant in forming planetary systems and that asteroids and comets, rich in water from the solar system's early days, likely delivered much of it to Earth through billions of years of collisions.
