Study Reveals Dogs More Likely to Start Bear Conflicts
27 Sep
Summary
- Dogs initiate 54% of bear encounters, study finds.
- Unleashed dogs are a factor in 85% of documented incidents.
- A dog's return to owner injured humans in 70% of cases.

Recent research challenges the heroic image of dogs protecting humans from bears. A comprehensive study analyzing 326 documented dog-bear encounters between 1901 and 2023 reveals that dogs are the aggressors in 54% of these incidents. This challenges the common perception of dogs as solely defenders.
The study highlights that dogs are unleashed in a significant 85% of these confrontations. When dogs encounter bears and then return to their owners, humans are injured in 70% of such instances. Black bears were found to be 3.6 times more likely to be involved than brown bears.
Experts note that a dog's evolutionary rivalry with wolves, relatives of bears, contributes to this antagonism. Many house dogs lack the training for such encounters, often running ahead and provoking surprise meetings. This research suggests that the presence of a dog does not necessarily enhance human safety in the wilderness.
