- Device brought high blood sugar to normal in mice.
- Trials show potential for drug-free diabetes, obesity treatment.

A novel wireless electronic implant has demonstrated the potential to manage type 2 diabetes and obesity without the need for drugs or insulin. Developed by bioengineers at ETH Zurich, this device utilizes an electrically powered catalyst to break down excess glucose in the bloodstream. Early trials on mice showed that activating the under-the-skin implant normalized elevated blood sugar levels within 60 to 90 minutes.
Over a six-week period, the treated mice experienced up to a 10% reduction in body weight and significant decreases in blood triglycerides. Unlike conventional treatments that manage glucose with insulin, this implant removes it entirely, converting it into gluconate, which is then excreted by the kidneys. Researchers describe this as directly targeting the energy surplus from glucose.
While promising, independent experts urge caution due to potential risks, such as the kidney's capacity to process gluconate and the depletion of essential electrolytes. The research team plans further testing in larger animals before advancing to human clinical trials, aiming to offer a new route for weight management and diabetes therapy.
