Cosmic Order from Chaos: New Theory Explains Magnetic Fields
26 May
Summary
- Researchers propose turbulent plasma jets create large-scale magnetic fields.
- Massive simulations used 137 billion grid points and 100 million CPU hours.
- New theory may explain magnetic dynamics in black holes and neutron stars.

The universe is filled with magnetic fields, yet the origin of their large-scale order from chaotic processes has remained a mystery. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have now proposed a new explanation, suggesting that organized jet-like flows within turbulent plasma are responsible for generating these vast cosmic structures. This groundbreaking theory emerged from detailed computer simulations.
The simulations, which utilized 137 billion grid points and substantial supercomputing power, introduced a renewed velocity gradient into the models. When these gradients were maintained, turbulent plasma developed ordered jet flows, leading to the formation of large-scale magnetic fields. Without this gradient, the systems remained chaotic and disordered.
This discovery could resolve a long-standing problem in astrophysics, as most existing dynamo theories have failed to replicate the observed ordered magnetic fields in space. The findings align with previous laboratory experiments and could significantly advance our understanding of magnetic dynamics in extreme cosmic environments like black hole formation and neutron star mergers.
