New Coating Cools Buildings Below Ambient Temperature
7 Oct
Summary
- Super-emissive coating achieved a roof temperature 3.4°C below outdoor air.
- Indoor temperatures dropped by 10.2°C compared to a control bungalow.
- The coating also improved heating efficiency by up to 5.9%.
A novel superomniphobic, self-cleaning, highly emissive (SSC-HE) coating has proven effective in cooling buildings below ambient temperatures. Researchers at Renmin University of China observed significant temperature reductions on a test bungalow in rural China. The coated roof surface was 3.4°C cooler than the outdoor air, while the interior of the bungalow experienced a 10.2°C drop compared to an uncoated control building.
Further experiments indicated the coating's broad applicability. It maintained sub-ambient temperatures at a telecommunications base station for over a year, with cooling effects reaching 5.3°C. Additionally, the coating enhanced heat dissipation in water tanks and improved the energy efficiency of electric oil heaters by up to 5.9%, demonstrating its potential for diverse thermal management applications.
