China Clones Yaks: Plateau Livestock Revolution!
28 Apr
Summary
- China aims for over 100 cloned yaks by 2028.
- New technology speeds yak breeding from decades to five years.
- Cloning addresses degraded yak genetics and inefficient breeding.

China has achieved a significant milestone in yak breeding with the successful batch cloning and natural delivery of 10 calves, marking a transition from experimental success to replicable production. Researchers at Zhejiang University aim to expand the elite cloned yak population to over 100 by 2028, developing an improved yak strain adapted to high altitudes. This innovative technology integrates whole genome selection and somatic cell cloning, identifying and replicating yaks with superior traits such as disease resistance and fast growth.
The breakthrough technology drastically reduces the conventional breeding timeline from two to three decades to approximately five years, enabling swift propagation of high-quality breeding stock. This addresses the critical issue of degraded yak genetic resources and inefficient traditional breeding methods that have plagued the industry for years. The advancement promises to aid in rescuing and protecting yak genetic resources and accelerating the development of improved breeds.
The project has already yielded 11 healthy cloned calves and established a stable somatic cell system. The first cloned yak, named 'Nam Co No 1', born in July 2025, demonstrated strong growth performance. A new yak breeding and germplasm conservation innovation center has been inaugurated in Damshung county, Xizang autonomous region, at an altitude of 4,300 meters, where these cloned calves are being raised.
