China's Moon Hopper to Seek Polar Ice

China is preparing for its most ambitious lunar endeavor, the Chang'e-7 mission, with a launch window opening soon. This unmanned mission will journey to the moon's south pole, focusing on the permanently shadowed craters in search of ice water. The Chang'e-7 spacecraft is a sophisticated multi-component system, comprising an orbiter for mapping and communication, a lander to touch down near Shackleton Crater, and a rover for surface analysis.

A unique feature of this mission is the inclusion of a small, solar-powered hopper. This robotic craft is designed to make short flights, enabling exploration within the challenging, deep craters that traditional rovers cannot access. This innovative approach aims to find water ice and other resources.

Previous missions have confirmed the presence of water on the moon, with significant discoveries made in 2009 and later in 2020 by NASA. The importance of lunar water extends to potential resources for future crewed missions, such as drinking water, oxygen for breathing, and hydrogen for rocket fuel. It may also hold scientific clues about the early Earth-moon system.

International efforts to explore lunar water at the south pole have seen recent attempts by Russia's Luna-25, which failed, and India's Chandrayaan-3, which successfully detected evidence of water.
