Cheetah Cubs Born: Watch Adorable Litter Online!
24 Oct
Summary
- Five cheetah cubs were recently born and are viewable via live stream.
- Cheetahs are classified as vulnerable, with fewer than 7,000 remaining.
- A severe genetic bottleneck 12,000 years ago impacts cheetah health.

Five cheetah cubs were welcomed at the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute earlier this month. A dedicated 24-hour Cheetah Cub Cam provides round-the-clock viewing of the new litter and their mother, Zura. This event is particularly noteworthy given the cheetah's conservation status.
The species is classified as vulnerable, not endangered, by the IUCN Red List. However, the global cheetah population has seen a dramatic decline of over 90 percent since 1900, with fewer than 7,000 individuals left in the wild. Their historical range has shrunk considerably, now occupying less than 10 percent of their former territory across Africa and parts of Asia.
Cheetahs face significant challenges, including a high cub mortality rate, with only about one in twenty surviving to adulthood in some regions. Compounding these issues is a severe genetic bottleneck that occurred around 12,000 years ago. This event drastically reduced genetic diversity, leaving current cheetahs highly susceptible to diseases, environmental changes, and fertility problems.
Conservation efforts, such as the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' managed breeding program and studbook, play a crucial role. These programs meticulously pair genetically compatible cheetahs to maintain the species' health and viability. The successful litter of five cubs at the Smithsonian represents a positive outcome of these dedicated matchmaking and conservation initiatives.
