Bumblebees Shock Scientists With Smart Problem-Solving Skills

Summary
- Bumblebees can spontaneously solve complex novel tasks.
- Nearly 75% of bees succeeded in a difficult manipulation task.
- Their cognitive abilities challenge previous assumptions about insect intelligence.
A recent study published on June 4th has revealed that bumblebees exhibit spontaneous problem-solving skills, suggesting they are more cognitively advanced than previously believed. Researchers from the University of Oulu in Finland designed an experiment where bumblebees had to manipulate a Styrofoam ball under a blue disk to access a sugary treat. Astonishingly, approximately 75% of the bees successfully solved this novel task without prior training.
To ensure the behavior was goal-oriented and not accidental, further tests were conducted where the bees' view was obstructed, and the ball's position varied. In these trials, around 80% of naive bees also succeeded, demonstrating a rapid ability to associate visual cues with rewards. These findings challenge the long-held belief that complex cognitive abilities are limited to vertebrates with significantly larger brains.
