Summary
- A new biodegradable balloon called Bioloon breaks down within nine months.
- Bioloons are made from natural latex without harmful chemical additives.
- The invention aims to prevent the lethal risks traditional balloons pose to wildlife.

A significant environmental threat posed by traditional balloons, which can leak toxic chemicals and prove lethal to wildlife, is being addressed by a groundbreaking invention called 'Bioloon.' Developed by a PhD student at Imperial College London, this innovative balloon is engineered to biodegrade completely within nine months, offering a sustainable alternative to the billions of balloons purchased globally each year.
Traditional balloons, made from natural latex but treated with additives, do not biodegrade and contribute to plastic pollution, posing a particular danger to marine life and birds. A 2019 study highlighted balloons as the highest-risk plastic debris for seabirds. The Bioloon, however, uses a modified manufacturing process without these harmful additives, ensuring it breaks down in soil, seawater, and deionised water alike.
This innovation stems from a partnership inspired by an events entrepreneur seeking to eliminate balloon waste from her decade-long career. With an investment of approximately £30,000, the research has resulted in a material that inflates easily and boasts a texture comparable to conventional balloons. The creators anticipate Bioloon could be available by 2028, with potential applications extending to other latex products like gloves and condoms.
