Bihar Gets New Air Pollution Watchdog
15 Oct
Summary
- Bihar's first continuous black carbon monitoring system installed in Gaya.
- New system studies air pollution's impact on clouds and rainfall.
- Data will help identify emission sources like biomass burning.
Bihar's first continuous black carbon monitoring system was installed at the Central University of South Bihar in Gaya on Thursday. This advanced system, an Aethalometer (AE36s), was set up by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune.
Part of the Union ministry of earth sciences' Aerosol Network Programme, this facility will continuously measure black carbon and other light-absorbing aerosols. Scientists expect the data to shed light on their emission sources, potentially including biomass burning.
The collected data is crucial for understanding how these particles absorb solar radiation and influence atmospheric heating. This can have significant implications for cloud formation, rainfall patterns, and the regional climate.
The ministry plans to enhance the station with more instruments for comprehensive atmospheric research, aiming to better understand the complex links between aerosols, radiation, clouds, and rainfall across the Indo-Gangetic Plain.
