Biggest Supermoon of 2025 Dazzles Skywatchers This Week

In just a few days, on November 5, 2025, skywatchers will be treated to the year's biggest supermoon. This celestial event occurs due to the moon's elliptical orbit, which causes its distance from Earth to vary. When a full moon coincides with the moon's closest approach, known as perigee, it is classified as a supermoon.

The upcoming supermoon will be the closest of 2025, positioned just 357,000km from our planet. This proximity will make the moon appear approximately 8% larger and 16% brighter than a typical full moon. Observers, especially those in London, will be able to witness the moon's bright edge emerge over the horizon during twilight, creating a breathtaking spectacle.

This effect is further enhanced by the "moon illusion," a phenomenon that makes the moon seem larger when it is near the horizon, using nearby objects for scale.
