Betelgeuse's Hidden Twin Unveiled!

For over a century, astronomers have sought evidence of an object orbiting the prominent star Betelgeuse. This quest has now concluded with the confirmation of a hidden companion star, named Siwarha.

Using the Very Large Telescope, scientists have captured the sharpest image to date of Siwarha, a small, hot star orbiting Betelgeuse. This breakthrough confirms a mystery that has intrigued astronomers since 1908.

Siwarha, whose name means 'her bracelet,' is estimated to be two to three times the mass of the Sun. Its close orbit means it disturbs Betelgeuse's outer atmosphere periodically.

The presence of Siwarha is particularly noteworthy because Betelgeuse is a red supergiant nearing the end of its life. Astronomers theorize that Siwarha's gravitational influence could impact the timing and manner of Betelgeuse's eventual supernova explosion.

Further observations are planned, with final confirmation expected in late 2027 when Siwarha is predicted to reappear on the opposite side of Betelgeuse. While a supernova is inevitable, its exact timing remains unknown, ranging from thousands to 100,000 years from now.
