Avalanche Energy Inc. has successfully raised $29 million to advance its development of compact fusion reactors, small enough to fit on a desk. The company aims to create portable fusion power sources that could eventually energize satellites, underwater drones, and remote installations. This oversubscribed funding round was led by RA Capital Management.
Fusion energy holds the promise of abundant, clean power, but miniaturizing the technology presents significant engineering hurdles. Avalanche is employing magneto-electrostatic fusion, using powerful magnets and high voltage to confine plasma. They anticipate their first 100-kilowatt reactor will be ready in the early 2030s, with a larger 50-megawatt system for data centers also in development.
Initial applications will focus on areas needing reliable, around-the-clock clean power, such as remote military bases and space exploration. The company believes its factory-mass-producible design will drive down costs. Several other fusion companies have also seen recent investment activity, indicating robust investor interest in the sector.
