Moon Astronaut Jeremy Hansen Steps Down from Full-Time Role

Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen will transition from his full-time role with the Canadian Space Agency starting in September, concluding 17 years as an astronaut and 32 years of military service. Hansen, who recently captivated the world by flying around the moon as part of the Artemis II mission, stated his move is not a departure but a pivot to new opportunities.

He will take on a reservist role with the Royal Canadian Air Force, aiming to support Canada's ongoing space initiatives. The Canadian Space Agency praised Hansen's leadership and professionalism, noting his contributions to Canada's space exploration history and his inspiration to young Canadians. Hansen was the only non-American astronaut on the Artemis II mission, which achieved a record distance from Earth.

The Artemis II mission, which included NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, achieved a record distance of 252,756 miles from Earth. Hansen described the experience as extraordinary, emphasizing the shared excitement felt globally. Future Artemis missions, including Artemis III and Artemis IV, aim to further lunar exploration, with landings planned for as early as 2028.
