Moon Safe: Asteroid Near-Miss Confirmed
5 Mar
Summary
- Asteroid 2024 YR poses no threat to the moon in 2032.
- New observations refined the asteroid's orbit, confirming a miss.
- The asteroid is approximately 200 feet across and will miss the moon by 13,200 miles.

Scientists have issued a welcome all-clear regarding asteroid 2024 YR, confirming there is now zero chance of a collision with the moon in 2032. Previously, there was a predicted 4.3% chance of an impact.
Refined orbital calculations, aided by observations from the Webb Space Telescope in February, indicate the asteroid will safely miss the moon by 13,200 miles on December 22, 2032. This asteroid, discovered late last year and approximately 200 feet wide, was initially a concern for Earth but was later ruled out as an impact threat for the next century.
