5 Mar
Summary
- Astronauts can customize meals for the 10-day lunar journey.
- More than 10 types of beverages will be available.
- Food is dehydrated and microwaveable for easy preparation.

The Artemis II mission's 10-day journey around the moon will feature a bespoke menu tailored to the astronauts' individual preferences. Over ten types of beverages, from mango-peach smoothies to hot chocolate, will be available. For meals, astronauts can choose from options like vegetable quiche, BBQ beef brisket, and macaroni and cheese, alongside 58 tortillas. Five different hot sauces will also be provided for those who enjoy a spicy kick.
All food for the mission is dehydrated and designed to be rehydrated and heated in the Orion spacecraft using a compact warmer and water dispenser. This method ensures food safety, shelf-stability, and ease of consumption while minimizing hazardous crumbs. NASA emphasizes that carefully selected meals are crucial for crew health, performance, and morale during the voyage, especially without resupply capabilities.
Previous lunar missions had limited food variety, but the Artemis II menu reflects decades of advancement in space food systems. Menus are adapted for different mission phases, with ready-to-eat options required during launch and landing. Astronauts have already sampled and rated all food selections during pre-flight testing, ensuring a satisfying culinary experience for Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, Mission Specialist Christina Koch, and Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen.
