Moon Voyage Complete: NASA Astronauts Safely Back on Earth
11 Apr
Summary
- Four astronauts completed a 10-day mission around the Moon.
- This mission was the first lunar journey since 1972.
- The crew tested critical systems for future deep space exploration.

NASA's Artemis II astronauts have safely concluded their groundbreaking mission, splashing down in the Pacific Ocean on Friday. This marks the first time humans have journeyed to lunar orbit and returned in more than half a century. The four-person crew, including mission commander Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen, began their 10-day voyage from Florida last week.
During their mission, the astronauts traveled farther into space than any humans before, looping around the far side of the Moon. They successfully tested various deep space equipment and systems aboard the Orion capsule. This flight serves as a critical test for future Artemis missions, such as Artemis IV, which aims to land astronauts on the Moon.
The re-entry phase presented challenges, including a brief communication blackout due to intense heat, a normal occurrence during high-speed atmospheric re-entry. Beyond the record distance, the mission also achieved significant firsts: Victor Glover became the first person of color to travel around the moon, Christina Koch the first woman, and Jeremy Hansen the first non-American. Engineers will now analyze the performance of the Orion capsule's heat shield, navigation, and life-support technology.
