Arginine: Your Immune System's Secret Weapon?
5 Aug
Summary
- Low arginine prevents cells from producing a key immune detection protein.
- Arginine supplementation reduced severity of flu and COVID-19 in research.
- Age-related arginine decline may explain increased infection risk.

New research from Rockefeller University highlights the critical role of the amino acid arginine in bolstering the immune system's ability to fight cancer and viral infections.
Scientists discovered that insufficient arginine levels impair cells' production of MHC-1 proteins, which are essential for presenting abnormal or foreign proteins to the immune system for eradication. This deficiency allows threats like viruses and cancer cells to evade detection.
The study demonstrated that dietary arginine supplementation could counteract these deficiencies. In research settings, arginine intake reduced the severity of influenza and COVID-19. Notably, even delayed supplementation proved effective against influenza in mice.
Furthermore, the findings suggest that the natural decline of arginine with age could partially explain increased susceptibility to severe infections and a higher risk of colon cancer in older adults. The research, published in Cell, indicates a significant link between dietary arginine and immune defense.
