Arctic Expedition Explores Sleep Quality
25 Jun
Summary
- Expedition begins pre-voyage testing including EEG scans.
- New research will monitor participant sleep quality during voyage.
- 20th Arctic Floating University voyage runs July 1-22, 2026.

The 20th voyage of the Arctic Floating University scientific expedition commenced its preparatory phase in Arkhangelsk. Participants are undergoing extensive pre-voyage testing, including electroencephalogram (EEG) scans and novel questionnaires to assess sleep quality. This research began prior to the vessel's departure on July 1, 2026.
The expedition aims to study human adaptation to the challenging high-latitude Arctic conditions. Researchers will monitor participants' heart rate variability and analyze hormones in saliva, urine, and blood serum. This comprehensive approach allows for a detailed understanding of physiological responses.
For the first time, the expedition is specifically surveying the quality of participants' sleep, tracking changes from before the voyage through its most demanding periods. This includes individuals who have sailed on previous voyages and newcomers, enabling a comparative study of individual dynamics.
The scientific voyage is scheduled to run from July 1 to July 22, 2026, aboard the Professor Molchanov research vessel. Organized by Lomonosov Northern Arctic Federal University and Sevhydromet, the project is supported by various governmental and corporate partners.
