Archaeologists Discover Potential Site of Jesus' Exorcism Miracle

In November 2025, archaeologists believe they have discovered the site where Jesus cast demons into a herd of pigs near the Sea of Galilee, as described in the Gospels. Dr. Scott Stripling, director of excavations for the Associates for Biblical Research (ABR), says a mix of textual clues, geography, and submerged ruins led his team to the town of Kursi in Israel.

The breakthrough came from exploring a partially submerged Roman-era harbor, guided by a massive ancient fish tank used centuries ago to keep freshly caught fish alive. Stripling's team located the harbor where Jesus may have landed before performing the exorcism, with massive stone jetties and a classic harbor construction. Nearby tombs and a steep cliff less than 164 feet from the water also match the biblical details.

Stripling notes that "from the harbor, every biblical detail aligns within a 656-foot radius." A Byzantine chapel known as the 'Chapel of the Miracle' also preserves a mosaic floor that some scholars interpret as depicting pigs, suggesting the site has been venerated for over 1,500 years. While no inscription proclaims "Jesus was here," the convergence of evidence forms what Stripling calls a "criterial screen" that no other site passes.
