Summary
- 1 in 5 Americans has taken a trip solely for food
- Philly cheesesteaks, NYC pizza, and KC barbecue top the list
- Gen Z and millennials drive the food travel trend through social media

According to a recent survey, the food travel trend is on the rise, with 1 in 5 Americans having taken a trip solely for the purpose of indulging in a specific dish or cuisine. The survey, conducted by Talker Research and commissioned by Visit Anaheim, reveals that younger generations are driving this culinary-focused tourism.
The data shows a generational divide, with 44% of Gen Zers and 31% of millennials reporting they've taken a "foodcation," compared to just 21% of Gen Xers and 11% of baby boomers. Platforms like TikTok and Instagram have transformed restaurants and specific menu items into destinations, allowing travelers to curate their itineraries through visual feeds rather than traditional travel guides.
When it comes to the most sought-after "foodcations," Philly cheesesteaks and New York-style pizza are tied for the top spot, each attracting 27% of respondents. Other iconic American dishes like Kansas City barbecue, Chicago deep-dish pizza, and Texas-style barbecue round out the top five. Travelers are willing to double their travel budgets to experience these signature regional specialties.
The survey findings suggest that for many Americans, the menu has become the itinerary, with entire trips planned around the chance to savor a dream meal. This culinary-driven tourism not only satisfies nostalgia and curiosity but also helps travelers better understand the cultural identity of different cities and regions.
