Bell-ringing Family Wins National Championship

A multi-generational York family has been crowned champions at the National 12-bell Striking Contest, continuing a tradition of bell-ringing that has deeply influenced their lives for over five decades. David Hull, a third-generation ringer, was introduced to the hobby by his parents, who also met through bell-ringing.

David met his wife, Alison, while both were ringers, and their children, including son Ewan, were immersed in the practice from an early age. Ewan even met his partner through a national youth bell-ringing competition. Their recent victory marks them as only the third York team to win the contest since 1975.

Bell-ringing is central to the family's identity, described by David as a way of life and a unique musical expression. He emphasizes the profound impact of the sound produced by the bells, calling them the world's loudest unamplified musical instruments that resonate across towns and cities.
