In Wuhan's Jianghan district, a notable community renewal project has breathed new life into the Huahang Building. Originally constructed in 1988, the building houses over 190 households, many connected to the city's rich shipping history. Designer Kuo Ta-chi, who has resided in Wuhan for 17 years, led the transformation, focusing on resident collaboration.
The project successfully integrated Wuhan's deep-rooted shipping heritage and wharf culture into the living spaces. A prominent feature is a playful ship-shaped structure built for children, reflecting the city's maritime past. This initiative revitalized the building, which previously suffered from issues like cluttered hallways and poor lighting.
Kuo Ta-chi's approach began with extensive community engagement, including door-to-door discussions to gather stories and ideas from residents, particularly retired shipping workers. This collaborative effort has led to a dramatically improved environment, with residents taking pride in maintaining clean, harmonious communal areas and a new gallery celebrating shipping history.
