Wounded veterans recently embarked on the annual Soldier Ride through the Florida Keys, cycling along the Overseas Highway. This event, organized by the Wounded Warrior Project, saw 45 men and women, alongside supporters, participating in the inspiring journey. Many riders utilized bicycles equipped with adaptive technology to accommodate combat-related injuries.
The ride commenced on Friday from a Key Largo VFW post, covering 17 miles to Islamorada, followed by a 10-mile segment including the iconic Seven Mile Bridge. This physical challenge is designed to foster healing and camaraderie among veterans, helping them overcome pain and reconnect with their peers. Bill Hansen, a participant, noted the importance of physical fitness for mental health and the significance of riding the Seven Mile Bridge.
Beyond the physical ride, the Wounded Warrior Project's initiatives provide crucial support for veterans. Funds generated from such events contribute to fostering independence, developing peer-mentoring programs, and arranging essential transportation for hospital visits. The cycling trips offer rehabilitative opportunities and raise money for soldiers recovering in military hospitals across America.
