- Kelso uses her small stature to her advantage in tight spaces.
Autumn Kelso, 32, has achieved the title of the world's shortest female firefighter, standing at 4 feet 10 inches. This achievement came after she left a seven-year corporate career seeking more purposeful work. Initially hesitant due to her height, Kelso was encouraged by friends to join the fire academy, which she completed in 2020.
Kelso's unique stature has proven advantageous, allowing her to navigate tight spaces and even crawl through a doggy door during a rescue. While acknowledging challenges, she meets all job requirements and can perform tasks like throwing a 24-foot ladder. She also previously pursued sign language interpreting and finds her fluency useful on medical calls.
Her journey through the fire academy was described as humbling and exceptionally challenging, regardless of physical size. Now serving as a firefighter paramedic in St. Pete Beach, Florida, Kelso has found a new 'home away from home' with her supportive crew, embracing her impactful career.
