Women Only Walks (WOW), an initiative founded in 2024 by Jemma Redden, has received substantial funding to bolster its commitment to women's safety and confidence in outdoor spaces. The group, which supports over 2,000 women across Leicestershire, was granted £6,000 from Harborough District Council's Ward Improvement Grant and an additional £2,000 from Market Harborough and The Bowdens Charity. This funding is earmarked for the WOW Safer Walking Programme.
The new program will introduce vital safety measures, including outdoor first aid training for volunteer leaders and members, as well as essential safety equipment such as first aid kits and visibility lights. Structured guidance will also be provided to support walkers of all experience levels. Redden established WOW to address concerns about women's safety, aiming to remove perceived barriers that prevent women from feeling secure while walking, particularly in rural or less populated areas.
