A 3.09-carat diamond was discovered at Arkansas' Crater of Diamonds State Park by Keshia Smith of Pennsylvania. Smith found the colorless gem, which features unique inclusions, while seeking comfort after the recent deaths of her son and father. She had planned the trip over a year in advance, hoping it would provide solace during her period of grief.
The diamond, described as having a flat, smooth appearance, was found by Smith as she dug in the park's search area. She initially placed the shiny object in her bag but was later encouraged by other visitors to have it examined. Upon confirmation, she experienced overwhelming joy, comparing the stone's shape to a heart.
Park superintendent Caleb Howell noted that few diamonds of this size are found, with only 15 weighing 3 carats or more discovered at the park in the last decade. While the park does not appraise found diamonds, Howell emphasized the unique sentimental value and natural beauty of stones unearthed directly from the earth, likening them to snowflakes.
