Laura Kelly, a 28-year-old woman, is sharing her journey of self-acceptance regarding congenital melanocytic naevus (CMN), a rare genetic skin condition that affects 98% of her body. Born in 1998, doctors initially feared for her life, and she underwent 14 operations as a baby.
During her teenage years, Kelly became increasingly self-conscious, resorting to heavy makeup and carefully chosen clothing to conceal her birthmarks. She felt compelled to inform strangers about her condition immediately upon meeting them.
Connecting with others who have CMN through the charity Caring Matters Now has been transformative for Kelly. Meeting people who look like her helped her realize she wasn't alone and significantly boosted her confidence.
Now, Kelly is gradually embracing her appearance, even wearing shorts outdoors for the first time recently. She views her uniqueness as a strength, stating, "Being different is unique, and being unique is better than being perfect." Her ongoing goal is to leave the house without makeup, celebrating her progress one day at a time.
