Brothers Tim and Chris Harris are set to launch a new water sports venture at Mere Cottage by The Mere in Ellesmere, beginning at Easter. The Paddle Bros, currently operating on the Shropshire Union Canal, will relocate to offer a range of activities.
Visitors will have the opportunity to hire stand-up paddle boards, as well as engage in canoeing and kayaking. The business will also provide lessons, with all bookings managed online. Free paddle sessions are planned for the opening day.
Tim Harris explained that he and his brother have extensive experience working with outdoor activity providers across the UK before establishing their own business three years ago. They have been actively involved with local community groups, including cubs, scouts, and schools.
Having waited for the ideal opportunity, the brothers seized the chance to operate at The Mere six months ago. They observed that while the area offers a beautiful walk, the water itself was not being fully utilized. Their new business aims to ensure the water's potential is realized.
Ellesmere mayor Liz Woodbridge highlighted that The Mere attracts over 300,000 visitors annually. She believes the new activities will significantly boost its appeal, providing additional attractions for visitors beyond enjoying the natural scenery.
Councillor Rob Wilson noted that the renovated Mere Cottage site will now be leased to The Paddle Bros. He anticipates the venture will complement nearby facilities, benefiting businesses like The Boathouse and the Kiosk, and serving as a great addition for visitors.
