A seven-month-old macaque, Punch, residing at Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan, has become an internet sensation due to his heartwarming bond with an orangutan plush toy. Reportedly abandoned by his mother shortly after birth in July 2025, Punch found comfort in the stuffed toy.
Videos and images of Punch clinging to, sleeping with, and playing with the IKEA Djungelskog orangutan toy have circulated widely on social media. This display of affection has deeply resonated with a global audience, triggering immense demand for the plush toy.
Consequently, the $20 toy has sold out across various countries, including the United States, Japan, and South Korea. Some online sellers are reselling the toy for significantly inflated prices, with one extreme case listing it for as much as $350 (approximately Rs 31,803).
Petra Fare, President and Chief Sustainability Officer of IKEA Japan, even visited the zoo to donate replacement toys, ensuring Punch's constant companionship. The viral frenzy around the plush toy shows no signs of slowing down.
