- Scottish Folds suffer from painful joint issues due to genetics.

A UK-based veterinarian, Ben Simpson-Vernon, has identified five cat breeds he would personally avoid acquiring due to prevalent health issues he witnesses in his practice. His opinions stem from extensive experience treating these feline companions.
Simpson-Vernon, known online as 'Ben The Vet,' highlighted the Sphynx cat, citing their genetic predisposition to heart disease, short average lifespan of six and a half years, and lack of essential whiskers. He also strongly advised against the deliberate breeding of Munchkin cats, emphasizing that their characteristic dwarfism leads to mobility issues and early-onset arthritis.
Further concerns were raised regarding the Scottish Fold, a breed known for its folded ears but also for a genetic disorder causing painful joint cartilage defects and arthritis. Simpson-Vernon noted the breed's increasing popularity, suggesting a disregard for known health implications.
He also expressed apprehension about Savannah cats, a hybrid of domestic and wild cats, due to their size, strength, and untamed instincts making them difficult to manage as pets. Finally, Persian cats with "smashed faces" (peke-faced Persians) were mentioned, highlighting their breathing difficulties, common infections, and eye and dental problems resulting from abnormal skull structures.
