Ed Bambas, an 88-year-old retired U.S. Army specialist, has amassed nearly $2 million in his bank account, thanks to the remarkable kindness of strangers. Bambas, who had been working 40 hours a week as a supermarket cashier to survive, was the subject of a GoFundMe campaign initiated by Australian influencer Samuel Weidenhofer after a video of him went viral.
After serving in the Army and working 40 years at General Motors, Bambas faced financial hardship following the loss of his wife and his pension due to the company's bankruptcy. Medical expenses had depleted his savings, forcing him back to work. The GoFundMe, aimed at helping him retire, received 67,000 donations totaling $1.9 million.
Inspired by the overwhelming generosity, Bambas plans to donate $1,000 each to 50 veterans in all 50 states, totaling $50,000. This initiative, named "For Your Service - 50 Veterans, 50 States, 50 Days," has its own GoFundMe site starting May 1, 2026, aiming to provide financial security for 50 veterans and their families nationwide.
