Accent Bias Costs UK Workers Promotions, Poll Finds

Growing evidence suggests that accent bias remains a significant issue in the UK workplace, causing anxiety for many professionals. Recent polling indicates that around one in ten individuals feel self-conscious about their accent during high-stakes work situations, such as participating in business meetings. This anxiety is particularly pronounced among those with Geordie and Cockney accents.

The impact of accent bias extends to career advancement, with about 5% of respondents believing their accent has cost them a promotion or a senior role. Those with Birmingham accents were most likely to report such experiences. Additionally, individuals with West Country and Geordie accents have reported their speech being mocked or criticized by colleagues, highlighting the pervasiveness of this form of discrimination.
