8 Sep
Summary
- Hanuman idol in Ujjain resists repeated attempts to move it.
- Heavy machinery and cranes failed to budge the revered statue.
- Archaeologists to scan idol and base for safe relocation strategy.
A road-widening project in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, has encountered an extraordinary obstacle: a revered Hanuman idol refuses to be moved. Despite four days of extensive efforts by local authorities, including the use of cranes and JCBs, the standing idol from the historic Khade Hanuman temple remains in its place.
The temple structure has already been dismantled to facilitate the project between Kanthal Square and Chhatri Chowk. However, the idol itself has resisted all attempts at relocation, prompting a pause in the use of heavy machinery due to fears of damage.
Currently sheltered under a temporary canopy, the idol has sparked significant public interest, drawing numerous devotees and leading to opposition from Hindu organizations. The administration plans to eventually install the idol at Tanki Chowk but awaits a specialized technical assessment.
Archaeologists are expected to conduct a scan of the idol, its base, and the surrounding soil. This will inform a cautious approach to determine how, or if, the idol can be safely shifted without incurring damage.
