"Trad Sons" Embrace Domestic Lifestyle, Challenging Traditional Adulthood

As of October 2025, a new cultural trend is gaining traction on social media: the "trad son" movement. This phenomenon involves young men, typically in their 20s and 30s, who have chosen to live with their parents and take on domestic responsibilities typically associated with stay-at-home partners.

One notable example is Luke Parkhurst from Las Vegas. After quitting his high-paying sales job, Parkhurst moved back in with his mother, Patty, and now spends his days managing household chores, including grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning, and routine home maintenance. Parkhurst describes this arrangement as his "dream job," and his mother is fully supportive of the situation.

Another prominent figure in the "trad son" trend is Brendan Liaw, who gained national attention for his appearance on Jeopardy! in May 2025. Liaw, who holds a master's degree in political science, was introduced by host Ken Jennings as a "stay-at-home son," a title he initially embraced as a "pretty good gig," though he later clarified that he was not fully committed to the lifestyle and has since enrolled in law school.

The "trad son" trend has gained traction on platforms like TikTok and Reddit, where videos and memes either celebrate or mock the lifestyle. Supporters argue that this unconventional approach challenges outdated gender norms, while critics question its implications for personal growth and development. Family therapist Kathryn Smerling suggests that for some young men, the comfort and security of living at home can be a refuge in a "conflictual world."
