Former astronaut Tim Peake recently visited a newly constructed scout hut in Haywards Heath, West Sussex. The 53-year-old, originally from Chichester, expressed that the foundational skills acquired through scouting, including resilience and teamwork, proved invaluable during his six-month mission aboard the International Space Station in 2015 and 2016.
He commended the local community for their extraordinary effort in fundraising, which amassed over £850,000 for the new centre. Peake officially unveiled a plaque commemorating the opening and shared insights into life in orbit, emphasizing the importance of scouting in developing crucial life skills.
Scouts aged four to fourteen from the Fifth Neighbours East Scout group attended the event. Peake recalled how objects like batteries and pencils floated during spacewalks, contrasting with the scissors he used to open the centre, which he had left in his car. A new space badge has been introduced for the scouts.
