Summary
- Jumping spiders are gaining popularity on TikTok as pets.
- These small arachnids are sold for $60 to $100 per creature.
- Animal welfare groups criticize the trend as a cruel fad.

Social media platforms, particularly TikTok, are witnessing the rise of an unusual trend: pet jumping spiders. These small arachnids, often called 'spooders,' are gaining a significant following, with videos showcasing their unique behaviors amassing millions of views. One viral video featured a spider named Violet seemingly hugging a clay figure before retreating to a miniature cottage. Violet, who died earlier this year, was one of several pet spiders owned by a South Carolina woman.
These creatures, which typically live for one to three years, are surprisingly accessible. A graphic designer from Nevada, Lauren Taylor, breeds jumping spiders, with prices ranging from $60 to $100 for each arachnid. She highlights the potential for a bond with these animals, an idea many find surprising given their eight legs and eight eyes. Another viral star is Opal, filmed tucking her babies into an egg sack.
However, the trend has drawn criticism from animal welfare organizations such as PETA. PETA has condemned the practice as a 'cruel social media fad,' arguing that these 'complex, sensitive animals' belong in the wild. Last year, a petition garnered over 2,000 signatures urging pet retail chains in the US to stop selling jumping spiders, reflecting a divided public opinion on the matter.
