Rat Infestation Forces Tenant From Home Amidst Foul Discovery
29 May
Summary
- Tenant discovered extensive rat droppings and human faeces in cellar.
- Persistent urine smell and blocked drains contributed to the unsanitary conditions.
- Housing association moved tenant to a hotel due to unresolved issues.

A 34-year-old man, Gary Alman, has been forced to live in a hotel after a disturbing discovery in the cellar of his rented flat. Initially excited about his new home earlier this year, Alman began experiencing a strong urine smell in April. The situation escalated when a tradesperson revealed the cellar's condition.
Alman reported finding approximately 200 pieces of rat faeces on the cellar steps and a river of human faeces on the floor. Blocked drains with wet-wipes were identified as a likely entry point for rats. These conditions have significantly impacted his health, causing anxiety and depression.
Despite reporting the issues to Riverside housing, Alman claims the problem was not resolved promptly, leading to his displacement. Riverside Housing stated they are treating the matter with urgency, have conducted pest control, and are investigating drainage issues. They have apologised for the inconvenience and are keeping Alman updated on progress.
