13 Sep
Summary
- Two students are recognized for their extensive volunteer work.
- They prepare thousands of food parcels for pets weekly.
- Their efforts support families and animals through a school program.
Niamh McAleenan-McQuade and Clare Reilly, students at Sacred Heart Grammar School in Newry, have been recognized for their significant volunteer contributions. The pair are finalists for a BBC Make a Difference Award in the Animal category for their work preparing pet food parcels.
Organized in collaboration with the USPCA, the volunteer scheme has seen approximately 30 girls participate over four years. Niamh and Clare have personally packed thousands of food parcels, which are distributed to over 50 foodbanks. This vital service helps families keep their pets during difficult times.
The program has expanded to include animal grooming and care, offering students practical experience. The USPCA highlights the critical need for such services, especially noting that some individuals prioritized feeding their pets over themselves during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sacred Heart Grammar School's volunteers are competing against other animal welfare initiatives, including long-term rescue work and therapy animal programs. The overall winners will be announced live on BBC Radio Ulster.
