Hainan's Tanmen: New Ways to Live from the Sea

Tanmen, a historic fishing town, is transforming its economy by blending traditional maritime life with burgeoning tourism. This shift is evident as over 500 local fishermen have recently moved into leisure and tourism-related employment, contributing to a recreational fishery output valued at over 100 million yuan in 2025.

The town now hosts events that immerse visitors in its culture, such as beachcombing seasons, a fishermen's market, and intangible heritage performances. These activities allow tourists to engage directly with the community's traditions, exemplified by the 'ganhai' or 'catching the sea' phenomenon.

This evolution is also reflected in infrastructure, with a dedicated recreational fishing pier accommodating leisure boats. The town's embrace of tourism, alongside its traditional fishing fleet and ancient sailing knowledge preserved in Geng Lu Bu manuals, highlights a dynamic future where new livelihoods are forged from the sea.

Furthermore, Tanmen's cultural heritage, including the ancient 'Xiongdi Gong' ritual, is gaining recognition as part of China's intangible cultural heritage. The opening of the Hainan Free Trade Port is also attracting more international visitors, some of whom are directed to Tanmen, where volunteers offer foreign-language services.
