Summary
- Crafters united a decade ago after a bridge collapse divided the town.
- The group hand-makes 3,000 items annually, saving 1.5 tonnes of fabric.
- Tadcrafters support charities and combat social isolation for members.

A decade ago, the town of Tadcaster was physically split by a bridge collapse during severe floods. In response, a group of crafters initiated a project to decorate the town's historic center with bunting, aiming to uplift spirits.
This initiative evolved into the Tadcrafters community interest company, now comprising 20 women. Since 2016, they have met monthly to create approximately 3,000 handcrafted items annually. These donations, estimated to be worth £25,000, are given to charities nationwide, including St Leonard's Hospice. The group also diverts about 1.5 tonnes of fabric and yarn from landfills each year.
Beyond their charitable work, Tadcrafters serves as a crucial social network. Members find companionship, combat social isolation, and engage in meaningful activity. The group's scope has expanded to include woodworking (Tadgrafters), gardening, and beekeeping, with a new branch established in Sherburn in Elmet.
