Tacoma's Cobblestone Streets: Historic Charm or Urban Nuisance?
17 Aug
Summary
- Cobblestone streets in Tacoma were mostly installed before 1910.
- Repairing Tacoma's cobblestone streets could cost between $20-35 million.
- Some residents appreciate the cobblestones' charm and traffic-calming effect.

Tacoma is home to approximately 5.5 lane miles of brick and cobblestone streets, primarily installed in the early 1900s, predating widespread automobile use. City spokesperson Maria Lee explained these materials were often chosen for their durability on steep inclines, where asphalt would have been less effective and concrete harder to produce in batches.
Reconstructing these historic streets, located mainly in the North End and near downtown, is estimated to cost between $20 million and $35 million. This significant expense is due to the need for full reconstruction from the subgrade up, as simply paving over them is not feasible. Maintenance of these surfaces is challenging, though some residents value their unique charm and the way they naturally reduce vehicle speeds.
While replacing them with asphalt or concrete would incur a high initial investment, it would lead to lower long-term maintenance costs. Despite the challenges, the city must prioritize such costly projects due to limited resources, often prompted by development or utility work.
