In Sydney's popular beachside areas, a growing number of teenagers are being seen riding e-bikes recklessly. These youngsters often operate their bikes on roads and footpaths without helmets, ignoring traffic rules and frustrating local residents. Some teens admit to illegally modifying their e-bikes to remove speed restrictions and achieve much higher speeds.
The prevalence of these modified e-bikes, including fatbikes known for their off-road capabilities, has surged in affluent areas from the Northern Beaches to the eastern suburbs and down to Cronulla. This trend coincides with a reported increase in e-bike related injuries treated at local hospitals.
Recent viral videos have amplified concerns, showing large groups of teens riding en masse. These incidents include footage of teens speeding over a golf course near Manly and performing stunts on the Harbour Bridge during a publicized "mass rideout." Such activities, alongside teens riding through shopping malls and obstructing traffic, have led to numerous complaints from both pedestrians and motorists to local councils.
