At the Sydney Royal Easter Show, the NSW Fancy Rodent Society celebrated its annual rat and mice event, showcasing 'happy, healthy, functional and friendly' animals. Experienced judges, including Rachel Sydenham with 30 years of rat-keeping experience, assessed the rodents based on their physical appearance and temperament. Judges observed the animals' comfort levels, with many rats readily interacting by standing, climbing arms, and cuddling.
Jennifer Birkett, another judge, meticulously evaluated mice, noting their relaxed demeanor. Entrants like Sam Dittmer highlighted the community aspect and the suitability of these small pets for apartment living. The competition culminated in awarding top honors, with Twisted Whiskaz Xero named grand champion mouse and Lucy Lou Ragamuffin taking the grand champion rat title.
Sandra McLean, owner of the grand champion rat Lucy Lou Ragamuffin, shared her passion for the hobby, which began after hand-raising three baby rats found in her shed. She emphasized the strong bond people form with rats, likening the grief of losing one to losing a dog or cat. The event underscored the joy and companionship these intelligent animals bring to their keepers.
