Strathmere Considers Beach Tag Fees
14 Aug
Summary
- Strathmere may end decades of free beach access next summer.
- Proposed beach tags cost $10 daily or $30-$45 seasonally.
- Revenue aims to fund beach upkeep and services.

Upper Township officials have introduced an ordinance that could end Strathmere's tradition of free beach access, with beach tags potentially required starting next summer. This proposed change, developed since 2022, aims to align Strathmere with other Jersey Shore towns that already charge for beach entry.
The ordinance suggests a fee structure including a $10 daily pass and season passes priced at $30 or $45. Officials anticipate this could generate around $230,000 annually, with funds earmarked for beach protection, lifeguarding, cleaning, and overall management.
Reactions from residents are divided. Supporters believe the revenue will help offset rising costs and reduce the tax burden on locals. Conversely, some residents voiced concerns that beach tags would foster an elitist atmosphere and detract from Strathmere's welcoming, free-spirited character, which they cherish.
A public hearing on the Strathmere beach tag ordinance is scheduled for August 24 at 5:30 p.m. at the Upper Township Municipal Building.
