Solo Traveler Dares Afghanistan: A Risky Border Crossing

Indian travel creator Ankita Kumar, popularly known as Monkey Inc, embarked on a solo expedition to Afghanistan with just 13 days left on her visa after four prior attempts were cancelled due to various issues.

Kumar entered Afghanistan alone, spending nearly two weeks traveling through cities including Kabul, Bamiyan, and Herat. Her journey involved navigating complex travel restrictions imposed by the Taliban, where women require male companions and permits are needed for inter-city travel.

In Kabul, she observed stark contrasts between beauty and poverty, and restrictions on women's appearances. Remote regions offered a different perspective, including a surreal tea encounter with Taliban members.

Herat proved to be a more liberal city, where she met female guides and observed women pursuing education online and running businesses, showcasing quiet resistance against restrictions.

Kumar's experience highlighted that Afghanistan is more than its rulers, emphasizing the humanity and hospitality of its people, particularly towards Indian visitors, despite the severe challenges faced by Afghan women.
