From Party Girl to Sober Rebel: One Woman's Journey
15 Feb
Summary
- Husband's brain injury triggered wife's alcohol dependency.
- New support network aims to 'redefine' alcohol recovery.
- The Sober Rebel Society launches a booze-free party event.

Nicky Wake, 53, from Manchester, has established The Sober Rebel Society, a new support network dedicated to redefining alcohol recovery. Her journey into alcoholism began after her husband, Andy, suffered a severe brain injury in 2017. This devastating event, which left Andy profoundly disabled, triggered a coping mechanism in Nicky that led to heavy drinking.
Initially a "party girl," Nicky found her drinking escalated dramatically as she navigated Andy's three years of intensive care, anticipatory grief, and solo parenting their son, Finn. Following Andy's death from Covid-19 in April 2020, her alcohol dependency worsened, leading her to hit "rock bottom" and enter rehab on November 6, 2024.
Disillusioned with traditional recovery meetings, Nicky decided to create a more celebratory and inclusive space. The Sober Rebel Society welcomes everyone, including the sober-curious, and aims to foster a community where sobriety is embraced with joy. The network's launch event is scheduled for Saturday, February 28th, in Manchester, featuring a unique booze-free party.
