- Owner declined to reclaim dog after her hold period.
- Dog is now recovering after treatment at the shelter.

A stray cattle dog mix named Kayla was found wandering alone and brought to the Green Lake Area Animal Shelter in Wisconsin on March 15. Shelter staff noted early warning signs of illness, including a distinct odor from her urine, but state law required a waiting period before extensive medical procedures could be performed. After this hold period expired, Kayla's previous owner was contacted but declined to reclaim her, deeming her "too much of a hassle."
Following the owner's decision, the shelter proceeded with testing, which confirmed Kayla was suffering from Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and a urinary tract infection. Both Lyme disease and anaplasmosis are tick-borne bacterial infections that can cause symptoms such as fever, lethargy, and joint pain. Kayla is currently receiving antibiotic treatment for all three conditions and is expected to remain on medication for another two weeks. Her physical and emotional recovery are ongoing, with staff noting her gradual progress in becoming more comfortable and responsive.
Following her treatment and a follow-up examination, shelter staff will have a clearer timeline for when Kayla will be ready for adoption. The shelter team is dedicated to her recovery, noting small but meaningful progress in her shy demeanor and cautious interactions.
